Office of Teaching and Learning

Dr. Karen M. Sangmeister has been with the Rochester City School District for almost twenty years, following earlier careers as an engineer with the Eastman Kodak Company and as a stay-at-home Mom.

Karen grew up in Philadelphia and South Jersey, and considers herself a former “city kid,” which makes her feel at home working in the RCSD. Her teaching assignments focused mostly on alternatives, such as transition work with long-term suspended students, a self-contained classroom in an alternative middle and high school, and summer school at the Monroe County Jail and the Rochester Housing Authority. She also taught GED preparation in Family Literacy classes at RCSD School #45 for five years. She has been an administrator with the District for eight years, spending five of those years with the corporate function of Student Placement. She was delighted to be offered the opportunity to work more closely with children and teaching and learning last year when she was asked to shepherd a federal APIP grant. This year, her responsibilities include supporting the Major Achievement Program, A.V.I.D., Advanced Placement, and the S.A.T. score improvement initiative.

Karen has taught one section of the (action) research course to master’s degree candidates at Nazareth College since 2002, and enjoys reconnecting with her former students, now teaching, as she works throughout the District.
Karen’s research interests are in qualitative work, with a focus on teacher talk. Her work argued that subtle choices made by teachers during routine classroom transitions have a profound impact on the children in their care.
