Co-creating a K-20 Pipeline Initiative Quarter by Quarter…

Looking back on the development of this exciting initiative give us the chance to chronicle and celebrate key steps along the way.

January-March 2011:  Funding and Forming

  • MCC is awarded a FIPSE innovation grant to establish the Community Center for Teaching Excellence (CCTE).  The Facilitation Committee is formed and begins exploring ideas and possible paths to realize the program’s vision, mission, and goals.
  • Administrative leaders establish the evaluation framework, engage the Center for Governmental Research (CGR) as external evaluators, and attend the annual FIPSE conference.

April-June 2011:  Staff Search and Selection

  • An interdisciplinary Search Team, including Facilitation Committee members, screens and interviews candidates for the position of Program Director.  The position is filled in June, and the new Program Director and Program Secretary are engaged to work full-time on the initiative.

July-September 2011:  Literature Review and Getting Acquainted

  • Over the summer months, the Program Director makes personal visits to Facilitation Committee members to get acquainted and learn about the perspective and concerns of each respective partner district and institution.
  • The Director does a review of relevant literature, and creates an annotated bibliography for the Facilitation Committee to discuss, along with draft documents of the CCTE vision, mission, philosophy, and goals.

October-December 2011:  Common Vocabulary and  Program Ideas

  • The Facilitation Committee establishes itself as a Professional Learning Community, and meets bi-weekly throughout the fall semester.  Working collaboratively, the group revises and endorses CCTE core documents on vision, mission, philosophy, and goals.
  • The group reviews aggregated student and institutional data to better understand “leaks in the pipeline.”
  • Beginning with the annotated bibliography from the summer’s work, the Facilitation Committee creates a fifty-page Key Terms Glossary which reflects our common understanding of key concepts, theories, and instructional techniques across K-20.
  • The group explores program ideas to focus on and support K-20 teaching excellence, and endorses establishment of a Faculty Fellows Program for K-20 Educators.

January-March 2012:   Faculty Fellows Program Established and Launched, along with CCTE Website

  • A vision and overall plan for the Fellows Program is endorsed by the Facilitation Committee which now meets monthly.
  • The Fellows Program is structured as a cross-sector Professional Learning Community (PLC) to explore research-based teaching strategies and employ action research to test their effectiveness.
  • A Fellows Planning Group is established to create a more detailed instructional plan to guide the development of Fellows PLCs.
  • Each partner institution takes responsibility to inform, invite, and recruit teacher participation in the program.
  • The program launches on March 5th with a celebratory luncheon  attended by more than 60 educators from across the region. Twenty-seven Fellows in two cohort groups begin working together.
  • The CCTE website is created to provide space for online collaboration that supplements face-to-face meetings.  The site will provide a platform for the Fellows PLCs and Facilitation PLC to create a regional knowledge base of best teaching practices.
